Being Centered

So people talk about being centered, but never really explain what that means. Centering is when you focus on your breathing and pulse and try to bring it to a regular tempo. This allows you to be very aware of just what your body is doing from moment to moment, and potentially brings clarity to your mind and soul.

The reason for this is that when your mind is focused on something regular and rhythmic, it can put aside more of the momentary invasive thoughts and instead find focus. People with ADHD like me can use this technique to bring back focus on a task or a topic when we lose it.

Just like this: Breathe. Listen to your breath, but don’t try to control it at first. As you listen and breathe, it will settle into its own pattern, and you’ll find that some of the racing thoughts will fade from your consciousness. It doesn’t always work on everything in your thoughts, but centering is still a great technique to learn when you need focus.
